Tirupati temple organises mass marriages

As many as 7,600 couples entered into wedlock in a mass-marriage programme conducted by the governing body of the Tirupati Venkateswara
temple across Andhra Pradesh on Sunday.

The mass-marriages, organised by the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD), under the 'Kalyanamasthu' programme were performed during the auspicious 'muhurtam' between 10.55am to 11.10am.

Governor ND Tiwari, chief minister YS Rajasekhara Reddy and TTD Chairman DK Adikesavulu Naidu attended the programme.

It was a momentous occasion for 52-year-old Nagaraju and 48-year-old Saroja of Tirupati -- who could not so far get married because of their family responsibilities -- as they tied the knot at the Kalyanamasthu programme in the temple town.

A mild commotion was witnessed during the ceremony at Karimnagar when the sister of a bride alleged that the groom had kidnapped her sister three months ago.

However, the row ended after the bride, a major, made it clear that she is marrying the groom out of her own choice.

The TTD gives Rs 7,000, a golden 'Mangalasutra' and tickets to have 'darshan' of Lord Venkateswara at Tirupati to each couple.

The TTD earlier organised mass-marriages in three phases.
